The History of Qinzhou Nixing Pottery
Qinzhou is a cutural city. Four or five thousand years ago, ancient people who lived in Duliao of southern Qinzhou, Sanhaiyan of Lingshan, Guli of northern Hepu, Majingpo of northern Qinzhou and other relics were able to make and use the pottery. In Qin Dynasty, Xiaozhuan Characters were started to use here. In Tang Dynasty, it became a prosper station of Maritime Silk Road. In Han Dynasty, the pottery making was prosper and of high quality. The production sold well in Southeast Asia and West Asia.
In Tang’s Kaiyuan 20 (732AC), huge pottery monument was successfully made. At the end of Qing Dynasty, Nixing pottery had become a special craft, with the beauty of hand-writing, painting and the pottery itself.
In 1915, Nixing pottery won the golden prize of Panama Pacific Exposition. In 1930, it won the first prize in Belgium World Ceramics Exhibition.
In 1953, pottery of Jiangsu Yixing, Nixing pottery of Guangxi Qinzhou, purple pottery of Yunnan Jianshui and pottery of Sichuan Guangrong were named the four famous pottery of China by Ministry of Light Industry for their long history, unique appearance and cultural meaning.
In 2013, Qinzhou was chosen as the hometown of Nixing pottery.
In the new historical period, Nixing Pottery develops rapidly. Many people devote to pottery making,especially some cultural celebrity and specialists from universities. They continually innovate and reconstruct many aspects of Nixing pottery, such as shape,decoration,and the way of firing. The hand-writing and painting on the pottery concentrate more on making images rich in stereoscopic feeling, which gives the Nixing pottery more cultural connotations and value of collection.
